Saying no to a job

There is a side of freelancing, contracting and consulting that people don’t often talk about.  It today’s difficult economic climate it is increasingly rare that people turn jobs down, but sometimes you just have to.

There are certain roles that in a boom you would just ignore.  But as times get tougher you can be tempted to take on roles or contracts that are just not right for you, because you feel you have no other option.

Of course, we are not saying that you should turn a role down just because, but there can be certain reasons why it is OK to turn down a role.

Cost-effective

Sometimes it simply isn’t worth taking a role.  Financially, in the long run, you may be better off holding out for something better.  For example, if the rate is low and there is a lot of travel involved it might be better to wait.

Work that doesn’t inspire

You can be tempted to take on a role because you are desperate.  Employers can see this and can often take advantage.  Don’t be tempted to take on something you simply are not interested in.  You won’t give it your all and will soon become stressed and frustrated.

Unreasonable expectations

This one is true for freelancers especially.  Don’t feel tempted to take on a client that is unreasonable or has too high expectations.  In tough times people will quite often want something for nothing.  Be careful not to under sell yourself.  It is no fun working at a loss.

When turning down a role honesty is always the best policy.  Keeping your options open is not a bad thing, just don’t be foolish.  Only you will know what you are willing to do.
